Week 2 Reflection--Personal Action Research

After listening to these scholars, I have a better understanding of action research. All of them gave detailed examples of how they use action research in their profession especially in analyzing information. I really enjoyed Dr. Briseno’s interview when he mentioned that his school does not make decisions without using data whether it is quantitative or qualitative. I am a very analytical thinker, so I appreciated the reminder of thinking abstractly at qualitative data. I constantly look at data reports to form conclusions, and I often forget to look past the numbers to figure out what the data really represents. Also, Dr. Lewis mentioned “tearing up” research or making it practical in order for it to be incorporated in a specific action research topic. Again, this very similar to thinking abstractly. After watching the videos, I have realized thinking “outside the box” needs to be a personal action research topic of mine.

Action Research

Administrative inquiry or action research is the process of an administrator reflecting on his/her administrative practice and making the necessary changes for improvement. Such reflections can include posing questions, collecting and analyzing data, making needed changes, and sharing findings. Also, the main difference between action research and traditional educational research is that the traditional method focuses on outside research. It does not incorporate the input of the people that work in the school every day like teachers and administrators. Action research on the other hand focuses on the concerns of the practioners. This is very beneficial because practioners know firsthand what issues need to be addressed. Also, action planning would allow teachers and administrators to work collaboratively. Because teachers are involved in the process, they would be more likely to incorporate the changes. They would have a sense of ownership of the research. I think there are numerous ways to use action research. The text mentions getting an advanced degree, establishing inquiry meetings, create leadership teams, develop Professional Learning Communities, and sending questionnaires to teachers (Dana 20009). I would incorporate action research in my routine by scheduling a time a couple times a week to think on decisions or actions I have made. I would also use this time to reflect on areas where the campus needs to improve.

Educational Leaders and Blogs

I believe blogs are useful to educational leaders because it allows administrators to organize and store their thoughts. Also, blogs are very beneficial because administrators have the ability to look back and reflect on previous posts. I also like that other administrators can comment on post and give their feedback. Because administrators may be faced with similar problems, collaboration can be a great way to find a solution.
